Porter Scholars

John "Jack" Gardner, plans to attend Belmont University in Nashville, TN, fall 2017,majoring in Music.  Jack is a vocalist and musician, and has been involved in music programs for over nine years.  His talents earned him the prestigious “Essentially Ellington Musician of Merit Certificate for Outstanding Performance.” This distinction is awarded during “Jazz at Lincoln Center,” an annual high school festival held in May in New York City.  For several years, he has made All-State Mixed Chorus, tenor, Symphonic Band on alto sax and 1st band 1st chair senior year with the highest overall score on tenor sax for jazz band. He was a member of Central High School concert band, Jazz big band and Madrigals. He was a Junior Civitan and a member of the All-City Band. Jack was also a top AP music theory student.  

Grace Zimmerman graduated Salutatorian from Dover High School, Dover, AR in 2017. She received numerous academic awards, was an AP scholar with Distinction and a member of the National Honor Society,  recognized as top 10% of class by Chamber of Commerce,   Senior Member of the Dover Leadership Coalition, Tri-M Music Honor Society,  BETA Club, Dover Quiz Bowl,  Dover Educational Talent Search and   Dover Gifted and Talented.Grace is trained on cello and piccolo but her achievements on flute are also notable. Her musical achievements include All-State Band (3 years, 1st band, 1st chair flute senior year)  Arkansas Symphony Youth Orchestra (principal flute, 3 years)  All-Region Band (6 years, 1st band, 1st chair flute senior year)  All-Region Orchestra (3 years, 1st orchestra, 1st chair flute every year)  UCA Honors Wind Ensemble (2 years, 1st band, 1st chair flute every year)  Hendrix Festival of the Wind (1st piccolo)  Tech Band Camp (4 years, 1st band, 1st chair for two years)  Arkansas Tech Outstanding Musician Award  Dover Midnight Brigade (section and squad leader)  Dover Outstanding Musician Award  Solo and Ensemble Competition (1st Division award, flute and cello). She will be attending the University of Central Arkansas pursuing a double major in Music Education and Music Performance.

Kendric Kelley was a 2016 graduate of Central High in Little Rock and attending the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB), Fall 2016 studying music education. He was a saxophone section leader in both Central’s marching band and jazz band. For the last four years Kendric has been first chair saxophonist in All-State and All-Region Marching and Jazz Bands. He not only plays saxophone, he also sings. He is head tenor in the youth choir at his church as well as vice president of the youth usher board. Last month Kendric was a participant in the NAACP’s Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics (ACT-SO) in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 2015,2016, he has attended Kids Across America Camp held in Branson, Missouri. 

Madison Moline graduated from Conway High School in 2015, with a 4.0 GPA. She has been immersed in music since first grade. Madison plays piano, guitar and viola.  She was active in the Conway Symphony Orchestra, Beta Club, Key Club and Advanced Female Orchestra and Quartet Vivant. She participated in the Brigham Young University Summer Festival, Faulkner Chamber of Music and Wildwood Academy of Music and the Arts. Madison was also selected as a member of the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America in 2015. The orchestra performed in New York and seven cities in China. Madison majors in Music Performance and Music Education at Brigham Young University.

Edward Barnes III graduated from Mayflower High School in 2014. Edward was 2013 ConcertMaster for Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. He served as ConcertMaster from 2010-2013 for Arkansas Southern All-Region Orchestras. He also participated in Midori Master Class Orchestra Residencies Program, Arkansas All-State Chamber Orchestras, All Region Central Arkansas Mixed Sr. High Choir and American Choral Directors Association 2011 National Jr. High Honor Choir. Edward was elected Senior Class Reporter, Student Council Sr. Representative 2013, Freshman Class Secretary 2010, and 2010 Upward Bound Mayflower Representative. Edward was selected for the Arkansas Governor's School 2013 and Mayflower Chapter of Arkansas Gifted and Talented Education Academic Excellence for 2011, 2012, and 2013.

Jordan Ladyman graduated in 2013 from Searcy High School. He was a member of the high school concert band, orchestra, jazz band and was drum major for the marching band for 2 years. He was also selected for the all-region band 4 times and all-state band twice. As a vocalist, he was a member of the high school concert choir, chamber choir, male ensemble, and started a student run A Capella group. He was selected for all-region choir twice and all state choir twice. We’re not done yet; Jordan was a member of the Chess Club, Quiz Bowl, Beta Club, Spanish Honorary, National Honor Society and Future Teachers of America. With all of these affiliations, Jordan maintained a grade point average of 4.03. Jordan is currently attending Arkansas Tech pursuing an instrumental music education degree.

Jeffrey Robbins is an alum of Parkview Arts and Science Magnet High School. An aspiring musician, Jeffrey was a member of the school’s marching, symphonic and jazz bands and led the trumpet section for two years. He received various awards and attended the prestigious Berklee College of Music Summer program as a senior. He played soccer and served as team captain for Parkview’s co-ed team. Jeffrey served the community working with the Salvation Army as an angel tree worker and a Christmas distribution worker. Jeff attended University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and Florida Atlantic University.

Alan Sharlow graduated from Parkview Art and Science Magnet High School. While studying there he helped compose and arranged music for several productions. He played alto saxophone and earned spots in All Region and All-City Jazz Bands. He was a member of Faithful Notes, a sax duo and performed at the Arkansas Governor’s School Band. Alan was ranked in the top quarter of his class and was a member of National Beta Club and Mu Alpha Theta. Alan received his bachelors degree from University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in Music Education. He is also certified in vocal and instrumental music. Alan is currently
teaching in Louisiana.
 
Tiffany L. Williams graduated from McClellan High School. A leader throughout her high school career, Tiffany was involved with the Future Business Leaders of America, the Spanish club and drill team and cultivated her love for music studying piano and singing with the Madrigal Singers and her high school choir. She served the community volunteering with organizations such as the March of Dimes, Toys forTots and Valentines for Veterans.
